Thisuniqueproduct-whichwedevelopedinclosecollaborationwithitsinventorsatStanfordUniversity-offersarangeoftrulyexcitingsurfaceimmobilizationschemes.SAMsterminatedwithazidegroupsreactwithacetylene-bearingmoleculesthroughtheso-calledSharpless"click"chemistry(Angew.Chem.Int.Ed.2002,41,2596-2599)toformstabletriazolelinkages.Inaseriesofingeniousexperiments,theStanfordteamshowed(i)howthisreactioncanbeusedtoimmobilizevarious(bio)moleculeschemoselectivelyandinexcellentyields(J.Am.Chem.Soc.2005,127,8600-8601),and(ii)howitcanbecoupledwithelectRochemistrytoallowforsite-selectiveimmobilization(J.Am.Chem.Soc.2006,128,1794-1795andalsoScience,Editor?sChoice,10February,2006).



Inthelattercase,applicationofvoltagebiastoagoldmicroelectrodesupportingazide-terminatedSAMchangedtheredoxstateofanauxiliarycoppercatalyst,andthusactivatedtheSAMforthe"click"chemistry.Byactivatingdifferentmicroelectrodesatdifferenttimes,itwaspossIBLetoimmobilizevariousmoleculesontothem.ThecapABIlityofsuchsequentialimmobilizationshouldproveextremelyusefulinthedevelopmentofelectrochemicalmicrosensorarrays.
